"The Russians who settled along the Pacific rim of North America must have been real builders. The searching pencil of Artist E. A. Burbank has presented above a beautiful and frank sketch showing the sturdy skeleton of a saw mill which Russians built at Mill Valley in 1843. It took longer in those hand-tool days, but perhaps it was worth it. At least many of their structures still stand. Those who went on the Pacific Rural Press Alaska tour heard considerable of the Russians and their influence. They had a greater population in Alaska than we have ever had, and some of the present towns are only half as large as they were when the Russians were in control. Considering the difficulties under which they worked, the Russians appear to deserve a lot of credit."
